Comment on Be Careful with Spam from Research Media by Dr.Phys

Minutes ago I got the following solicitation from Research Media. I’m a physicist, so this is not just targeting biologists or medical researchers. This is much more casual and friendly than the random spam I get out of Asia. This is as close as I’ve come to taking the bait. I’m reproducing some of the verbiage here to help others see what it’s like. All in all, however, $3K for glossy self promotion may be very useful for tenure decisions in small and relatively unsophisticated institutions. It may be worth the money, but one should be aware that this is simply vanity publishing and has no scientific or real disseminatory value.

________

Dear Dr. Slipmok,

I would like to speak with you concerning your project, the Physics of Biomedicine.

Research Media are producing a special publication in June 2014 and we would like to feature your work, within this publication we will be working with a small number of researchers and institutes with a broad focus on space, physics and earth sciences.

Our publication is called International Innovation and is quite different to typical scientific or peer reviewed journals, we cover the most important issues in science, education and research currently but our approach was developed to bridge the gap between science, education, policy, research, government and the private sector.

The series of reports provides concise, educational, informative and easy to understand information to all key stakeholders involved in the sector and beyond. We publish in hard copy format, along with digital.

The primary element of our work is to have a team of editors, science journalists and graphic designers translate often complex science in to a easily understandable piece that clearly demonstrates impact and relevance of the research to the wider community of stakeholders.

A very important point to note is that very little of your time is required in production of the article. I understand how busy you are at present but we have lots of time before the production deadline, throughout this process we usually require around two to three hours of your time over the coming months.

We will have an editorial team from Research Media assigned to you directly. This experienced, highly skilled team have worked with hundreds of scientists to disseminate in a simple language to a professional, visually attractive standard.

If you are not familiar with the publication you can view recent digital editions via the following link:

http://www.international-innovation-northamerica.com

Before we talk further please look over the attached articles recently produced. These examples will give you a clear idea of how your article could look.

I hope you agree, the attachment example articles I have sent look wonderful, and are written to the highest of standards.

International Innovation will also feature a selection of high level figures from both Government agencies and some of the worlds leading organisations and associations involved in the enhancement of research and science policy.

—-It then goes to list a bunch of previous “interviewees” and countries to which they disseminate information, etc…

Well, maybe it was the extra attention that made the cows more productive. It would take quite some cajoling to get a cow to agree to have some contraption put on it.

Most likely, the problem here was that the paper is rather boring, so the reviewers didn’t really think deeply about it. However, it was the guest editors’ responsibility to go over the paper carefully before accepting it. Peer review is not all that it is cracked up to be. Nonsense is not unique to open access journals. If it were so, we would know what not to read.

Hello all,

we can add another name to their imprint because I just received an email from them:

“This is Cultural and Religious Studies (ISSN 2328-2177), an international, professional and peer reviewed journal published across the United States by David Publishing Company, 240 Nagle Avenue #15C, New York, NY 10034, USA.”

I was wondering why DOAJ keeps in the lis the Journal of Biomedical Science and Engineering which is a SCIRP Journal that i guess to understand that is a predatory company.
Any explanation would be appreciated.
Thanks for your work, you make my group avoid publishing on the Open Biomedical Engineering Journal by Bentham Science

Dear Mr. Beall,
Today I received spam from “Herald Scholarly Open Access”. Is this the same scam as “Herald International Research Journals”?

In 2012 you reviewed Lifescience Global, noting it to be rather advanced compared with the typical predatory journal. It remains on your list. I noticed that now one of its journals states:

“Journal of Analytical Oncology also has the honor of being affiliated with the Austrian Society of Applied Pharmacokinetics and currently indexed in Chemical Abstracts, CrossRef, WorldCat and HINARI databases.”

It seems to have published regularly for almost three years. Does it seem to look like a developing bona fide publisher or has the Austrian Society of Applied Pharmacokinetics been fooled into a honey trap?

I don’t think your either/or question is a fair one.
I do see this journal indexed in WorldCat.
However, they say they are “indexed” in Hinari databases. I don’t think Hinari is an indexing and abstracting service, so this is misleading. Same with CrossRef.
When one looks at this publisher’s website, one sees that they go overboard trying to show that they are 100% Canadian. This tells me that they probably have little to do with Canada and are likely really based in Asia.

MDPI is registered in Switzerland, and in China it is treated as a foreign company. What you described is simply a phenomenon of globalisation where international outsourcing of labor is commonplace. What many people fails to realise is that China actually houses quite a few internationally renowned journals, Cell Research for example (IF > 10), is described as “China’s leading journal in the life sciences”. What we should focus on is the quality of the journal, not the origin or where they have most of their employees.

Dear Beall,
Could you comment on these journals, International Journal of Academic Research, Journal of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences and Journal of Applied Environmental and Biological Sciences. I am wondering on the facts that these journals do not mention the chronology of reviewing steps (time of receiving, revising and accepting an article prior to publication. Thanks in advance

The International Journal of Academic Research appears to be a subscription journal (not open-access). I haven't analyzed it. Same thing for the Journal of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. The Journal of Applied Environmental and Biological Sciences is published by Textroad Journals, which is on my list. So, I recommend against submitting any papers to it.

It is highly likely that this operation is in fact not run by a Japanese, who would not have the scrupples to do this. I would fathom a guess that this is an operation by a foreign scientist or group of foreign scientists, who are abusing their stay in Japan to extract funds from Japanese. Currently, in a bid to win hearts over minds in Japan, MEXT is favoring the financing of MSc and PhD from SE Asian countries, and has been doing so for years now. Buying their forgiveness for WWII sex-crimes in SE Asia is also now inviting a wave of SE Asian-styled value systems. There are numerous cases where Japanese professors have been fooled by SE Asian students, and are now paying the price. So, I suspect that the “owners” of this operation are NOT Japanese. Maybe Jeffrey could try to contact them to get to the bottom of this. This gambling mentality sounds very much like something a Chinese, Indian, Iranian or Pakistani might do, but not a Japanese. Why does Dr. Beall not contact the Japanese authorities about this scam? They would take quite swift action, no doubt against the company and the management. Unlike In India, where the Government turns a blind eye to the wave of predatory OA publishers, even encouraging them to pursue their pseudo-academic goals, in Japan, an iron fist is still maintained against fraud and corruption, at least in academics, so we need someone to make a formal report to Japanese authorities about this.
