Comment on Is OMICS Publishing Group Sneakily Trying to Buy Its Way into PubMed? by carvaper

With “alternative” I mean those publishers who are not the well stablished and dominators of the STM publishing business.
Do they send SPAM? OK, critic them for that, that is fair.
Do they buy journals? I find not reason to criticize them for that, any publisher may purchase journals because it is somehow convenient for their strategy. Why Mr Beall do not criticize other publishers who buy journals? He always hit the same, whatever the reason, being fair or unfair. That makes me suspect he has some kind of interest in maintaining the dominant power…

Business isn’t my thing either…but isn’t “lack of adherence to industry standards” a common flaw in almost all budding publishers? after the phase of survival as a business, it’s a matter of time when they adhere to business standards…which again guarantees long term survival.
But of course in combination with the other two it might indicate fraud.
Thank you for your hard work…considering to benefit from it. Like you sir, I am a cautious person too, in fact very…
But, I do see a changing world…Don’t you?

Would like to know how one…I…could know about unethical behavior-lack of transparency and intentional use of deception- by checking on the publisher’s website. That’s the publisher we would see. (I am an author…not a publisher) What are the main things we should look for? Is COPE membership a must for a publisher? Or..is it a good to have?

Hi Jeff
Could you please let me know your comments on Recent Science publisher http://recentscience.org/
I’m considering publishing in some of its Computer Science and Electrical and Electronics journals.

Well, each one of its journals claims to have a high impact factor, (e.g., 3.228, 3.121) but in fact none of their journals has a legitimate impact factor. I recommend that you find an honest publisher.

good job but how do one identify good journals with all these fraudulent journals?

Read widely in your field; network; attend conferences; join scholarly societies in your field and become aware of their journals; talk to senior colleagues; consult with an academic librarian; examine journal metrics, read some more.

So do you still include Austin Publishing as predatory? I just got an invitation to join the editorial board of one of its journals which is now listed as being in the USA.

Austin Publishing Group

Tel: 201-655-7075
Email: pmr@austinpublishinggroup.com

Thanks

Yes, this publisher is still on my list. I think it is based in India, despite its claiming to be based in Australia previously. I find that its website is currently down, a good thing.

I concur to your observation. PUBMED needs to wake up. On a different note:

Prof. Beall,
Please could you comment on this publisher: International Journal of Current Innovation Research (IJCIR). They also talked about some publication charge that is not clearly defined. Thanks

I’ve analyzed this standalone journal and added it to my list. I recommend against submitting papers to it. Thanks for letting me know about it.

Thanks. I almost fell for this, because the email included:

Among the many high profile figures we have recently interviewed from the global research arena are the following;

- Canadian Space Agency: Gilles Leclerc
- - National Science and Engineering Research Council of Canada: Dr Suzanne Fortier
- Canada Excellence Research Chairs: Michele Boutin
- Canadian Foundation for Innovation: Dr Gilles G Patry
- Canada?s Minister of State for Science and Technology: The Honourable Gary Goodyear
- U.S. Department of Energy?s Office of Science: Dr. William Brinkman
- Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE): Gordon W Day, President
- American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME): Victoria Rockwell, President
- National Institute of Standards and Technology: Center for Nanoscale Science and Technology: Robert Celotta, Director
- American Society of Engineering Education (ASEE): Norman L. Fortenberry, Executive Director
- Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Society: Jerry Baker, Executive Director

Being an engineering researcher in a Canadian University, having the name of Dr. Suzanne Fortier, who was the former head of the main engineering funding body (NSERC), made me think that it was a genuine publication. It is a good thing that I checked online before falling for the trap. Thanks!

How about Far East Journal of Mathematical Sciences? Is it really credible?

This publisher does not meet the criteria for being classed as a predatory publisher in my opinion. It is not predatory. I can tell you, however, that its founder, Caroline Sutton, is extremely mean.

Can you let me know what aspect of the publishing operation led you to believe it might be predatory? Thanks.

Its not open access. I generally limit my work to OA journals.
Still, I would personally recommend not submitting any manuscripts to this journal.

Hi Jef
Would you kindly guide me where to find a list of credible open access journals in Statistics? I would appreciate this very much.

I focus on the questionable journals. I refer you to your university librarian. I don’t know what the top journal are in fields other than my own (library science).
