Comment on Publisher Uses Fake LinkedIn Identities to Attract Submissions by Ken Witwer

Not unlike another predatory publisher/meeting organizer–remember http://tinyurl.com/nazyz79 –who unfortunately are still at the game of creating fake accounts on social media to peddle their wares. Just a few days ago, I saw them doing it in a molecular biology group on Facebook, using one of their typical “white male”-sounding generic names like “John Daniels” or “Michael Smith”.

I should note that on both LinkedIn and Facebook, fake accounts can be reported. For example, declining a LinkedIn invitation like the one above leads to a short series of questions about why you declined and whether the account is a spammer, etc. I’m not sure about LinkedIn, but on Facebook, reporting a fake or abusive account may lead to removal of the material.

Mr Beall, please tell about Journal of Advances in Radiology and Medical Imaging launched by Annex Publishers. Is it too potentially predatory one or just a start up?

I have Annex Publishers included on my list here, and I recommend that researchers not submit papers to any of the journals they publish. Good luck.

Comment on Why Researchers Should Avoid the Clute “Institute” by Jeffrey Beall

Your indication that your paper was reviewed by a “well-reputed [sic] scholar and researcher” tells me that the peer review was not blinded and involved only a single reviewer. Given all the weaknesses and non-standard practices that I’ve documented for the Clute “Institute,” this does not surprise me.

Good luck getting a job with a quick and easy publication from the “Institute” on your CV. Which mail-order university did you order your degree from?

And terribly expanding, just got an invitation to a conference in Boston on Metabolomics. Many speakers, do not know anyone of them, but more shocking many sponsors, big mass spectrometry companies. And reading the first part 30,000 editors, 27,000 reviewers, over 300 journals, millions of reader, 100,000s like it in facebook, but where is Medline and other scientific reliable databases. The message that this is not a reliable journal must be spread much more, I put it into every of my presentations.

Hello Mr Bealll, hope you are doing fine. Please tell about Journal of Advances in Radiology and Medical Imaging by annex publishers. Is it a start up or potentially predatory?

Yesterday I emailed IJOHMN accusing two of their papers of plagiarism.

Today, those papers have vanished and have been replaced by two new papers!

Well, they moved quickly… but some retraction notices would have been nice.

I do not have any established criteria for evaluating conferences. If the second one is really organized by who it says it is, then it is probably is okay. The first one and the last one are anyone’s guess.

What would you say about journals belong to MECS Publishers?

I have analyzed this publisher but did not add it to my list. It’s not a predatory publisher. Individuals will have to decide for themselves whether they find this publisher’s journal appropriate for their work.

I could have sworn that “E-Cronicon” was the title of a Tangerine Dream bootleg recording from the mid-80s.
