Comment on I get complaints about Frontiers by AJ

I totally agree with this and am facing the same problem. Frontiers sends me requests for manuscripts to review now almost one per week. Last 10 days have been really bad and that’s what triggered me to vent out my frustration here! Since July 31st, I received 4 emails requesting to review! Even if these manuscripts fall in my areas of expertise, which they don’t, isn’t it a little too much? So, I believe that totally qualifies as reviewer spamming. Second, I am very flattered when seeing the manuscripts they send to me to review because I seem to be an expert in ALL the fields!! Every time I decline, I use the reason that it doesn’t fall in my areas of expertise. Since they mention about editing keywords, I actually took some time to re-visit my profile! Totally shocked to see the list of keywords they impose on you. Basically, it is a compilation of ALL keywords that appear in all your publications without any filter as such. That’s especially a curse for someone specializing in fields of bioinformatics or biostatistics. They are considered as experts in Kawasaki syndrome or drug abuse, etc. because in the past you have done some data analyses for these studies. May be there’s some “logic” (guilt by association?) for this? But I noticed some of the keyword “recommendations” – “History, 15th Century” – they have for a bioinformatician and then I knew that there’s something seriously wrong here. And there’s no way you can delete all keywords and enter new ones! You need to manually check each and delete. I did spend some time and “cleaned” up the keywords on my profile! And behold, now I am spammed even more and with even more “irrelevant” manuscripts to review! In fact, some time back, I did send an email about this to one of the editors with no response!

Currently, I am still diligently declining the requests. But if I continue to receive these emails at the same pace, I am seriously considering adding them to my spammers list so that I never get to see those invitations!

Dear Dr Beall, I want to publish with African Journal of Agriculture and Food Security (AJAFS) it is not in your list, but the publisher of the journal ''International scholars journal'' is indeed in your list. Is it ok for me to publish with AJAFS?

In my opinion, no. When I list the publisher, the listing applies to all the journals from the publisher.
I recommend that you find a stronger publisher.

This company publishes three journals:
Journal of Agriculture, Forestry & Environmental Sciences
Eduved, International Journal of Interdisciplinary Research
EDUVED Global Management Research
(GMR)

It is a strange company and its branding is confusing to me. I have analyzed the three journals separately and added each one to the standalone journals list. It is a very amateurish operation, and one of the journals boasts a fake impact factor. They lift and use pictures found on the internet to illustrate their websites. This is just a not-so-clever attempt to make money. I strongly recommend that all researchers avoid these three journals. Thanks for alerting me to them.

I had not heard of this journal before.
I have analyzed it and added it to my list. I recommend avoiding this journal and instead finding a better one.

I have analyzed number 1, namely the International Journal of Research in Science & Technology (IJRST), and added it to my list. It's horrible.

Some people, after they realize they have been tricked into publishing in a predatory journal, omit the publications from their CVs.

The specific journal I am referencing is The Journal of Schizophrenia Research with Austin Publishing. What are your thoughts about this particular Journal?

I don’t have any specific thoughts on the journal, but I do on the publisher. It is a horrible, predatory publisher.

Thank you. Based on all the information provided would you recommend pulling the publication and/or if not would you recommend listing on my CV? I really appreciate your thoughts.

From what I’ve heard, withdrawing and re-submitting (to a better journal) may be more trouble than it’s worth, and Austin may not allow you to do it anyway. I would not include it on my CV. Write new papers, submit them to better journals. In time, this single publication in a predatory journal will be a much smaller problem.

I agree with Jeffrey’s recommendation to move on. At the end of the day, a researcher’s work will be judged on the idea that is in the article, rather than where it was published. I know of no respectable university that will make promotion decisions based only on where an article is published. It is always the idea in the mind of the researcher that is more important. Of course, if the journal and the publisher is a sham, that will cause embarrassments.

Unfortunately I published in a journal of Austin Publishing Group and received this e-mail from an unknown person:

This is Dr. Inamura. I am writing to inform you about the fraudulent activities of Austin Publishing Group & SM Online Publishers, the publishers with whom you may have been volunteering as an editor/author. Recently, one of my research collaborator & associate professor had lost two of his grants and had to discharge his postdoc due to the freeze in his funding. He was an editor with these publishers and submitted his manuscript to them. A lack of his due diligence on these fraud companies led to the current restriction on his grant funding.

You will be stunned to know that Austin Publishing Group & SM Online Publishers are not US based operations, instead they are owned & operated by fraudsters from some city named Hyderabad in India. Following people are the owners: Mahendra Reddy Chirra, Siva Parvathi Chirra & Ari Padmaja. They deceptively use US addresses, fake names in emails, stolen Internet content & images to fool researchers. The two companies have same registration address in India and common owners. It seems the above three persons have deliberately formed two separate companies as a strategy to maximize their profits as quickly as possible. They have been secretive about their original location, which is in India. Cleverly, they have used the names like “Austin” to deceive authors and make us think that they are located in USA.

You are an editor/author with Austin Publishing Group/SM Group. Thus, I consider it to be my responsibility to share the information with you. Attached are the documents with details on the unethical and fraudulent activities of these two publishers, including the people behind the operation. Hopefully it helps you in taking appropriate measures to safeguard your reputation, funds and valuable time. Additionally, your appropriate actions will deter these fraudsters from fooling and making money from other scientists and physicians.

Thank you very much.

Sincerely,
Inamura

I e-mailed Austin Publishing Group and this was their response:

“Warm greetings from Austin Publishing Group
We are gathering information about Dr. P inumara and scholars he was talking about. We cannot find any information about Dr. P inumara from any University/Institute.
It is a fake email id created by someone to spoil reputation of Austin Publishing Group. Dr. P inumara neither provided any information about the current affiliation/phone number nor official email address.
We strongly believe that conducting an annual editorial board meeting will definitely enhance the quality and ruins all the negative issues raised on us.
In Jan, 2016 (New Year) We are planning to organize an editorial board meeting at our office (NewJersey). We understand and maintain that operational or decision-making authority should remain with our honourable editorial board members.
We try to resolve these issues as early as possible. We kindly request you to ignore all such fraudulent emails.
Looking for the long lasting and scientific relationship. Thank you for understanding and hope for the constant support in future.
Best regards for your ongoing research

Well, I don’t like to give their views on personal questions that are not consensus, more thought derogatory comment. There are big financial interests at the time of globalized media and scientific dissemination is an area included in this issue. As the credibility or not research in closed or open portals today very common are both questionable. There are many articles in journals of closed portals that about methodologies, results, etc. are as simple and no extraordinary those published in open portals open. I think that the portals open come to consolidate and tools are interesting.

Stormy, I suggest you to retract manuscript, add more data and publish in a reliable journal. Austin has fooled me by pushing me to pay exorbitant fee for an invited publication. They insisted to pay to them through PayPal to their local Indian bank. That was a red flag. I retracted my manuscript few months back. They are the cheaters and use fake names like “Nick Torrens”, “Matisse Ellie”. That is why you can never reach them by phone. They are not only the predatory publisher but also the identity thieves.

Stormy and other authors at Austin, I suggest you to schedule a Skype call with these guys. You are going to find out the truth. Probably, they’re not gonna come on skype. If they come they will bring fake person. Or you can ask “Nick Torrens” or “Mattisse Ellie” to send a copy of their US ID like passport/drivers license. Their New Year editorial meeting seems a fake proposition to buy time to make extra money before they permanently close their operations. Their SM Journal website is already down.

Austin has multiple website and registrars Write to all of them. For their website:
austinpublishinggroup.com and austinpublishinggroup.org, send compliant to their domain registrar CrazyDomains at help@crazydomains.com and cc to domains@crazydomains.com
and customercare@crazydomains.com

For website: austinpublishinggroup.info and austinpublishinggroup.net, send complaint to the domain registrar GoDaddy at abuse@godaddy.com

For website austinpublishinggroup.us, send complaint to the domain registrar Network Solutions at abuse@networksolutions.com

Hope it helps you.
