Comment on When a Journal Goes Bad: the Electronic Journal of Geotechnical Engineering by Jeffrey Beall

I think Ascent Journals is out of scope for my work at this time. It appears to be a subscription publisher. I can access the articles’ abstracts, but not the full text. I generally limit my work to open-access journals and publishers. I think that very few libraries subscribe to this publisher’s journals, so if you publish you work in their journals, it will be essentially hidden. I would recommend that you find a better publisher for your papers. Good luck.

I don’t know how did you reach to this article. I myself objected on this article, and to prove that the journal in which the article was published is a substandard journal. We sent one of our paper to the editor and insisted that we need acceptance within a couple of days and we received acceptance in 3 days ( how quick is peer reviewing). This is not the end, they published the papers without sending us Gally proof. The first online version indicated that it is single author paper. Later we sent an email to them about Gally proof and author’s name. After our email they included the names of other authors.

I think in most cases it’s better to avoid LAP Lambert. They will take your work an your copyright and they will make the work for sale, and no one will see it. It is probably better for you to put your work in a library or a repository. Most researchers decline the offer from Lambert.

Well, it’s interesting. I note that one of the featured conferences is the “Christmas Multidisciplinary Conference” to be held in Freiburg, Germany in early December. The conference is organized by the so-called “International Journal of Arts & Sciences,” which is not really a journal at all. Instead, it is an organizer of group tours that it markets as academic conferences, tours like the silly “Christmas Multidisciplinary Conference”. The firm is just a means of getting university travel money.

While I see that Conference Alerts does list some legitimate conferences, its credibility will be ruined if it continues to list and feature fake conferences like those from the company called International Journal of Arts & Sciences. There are many bogus academic conferences these days; any decent list needs to vet them.

Sir, thanks for reply Sir there is a query that they have published my research work as a Book format with ISBN No. the cost of book is 49.90 € but i’m some scared that the cost is too high & if even any single copy is not sold than Will I pay for that ? They will ask for money or not. this is my question because I do not know whether I’ve done correct or not with co-ordinate (make business) with LAP. Sir please reply as soon as possible. I’m so scared.

You are correct that the sales of Lambert Academic Publishing books are thought to be very low. Typically, the authors are not charged for the service of publishing, but authors do have to purchase their own books, and sales have to pass a certain threshold before any royalties are granted to the author. In my opinion, in most cases, contracting with LAP is not a wise choice.

Dear Dr Beall, recently I received an email asking to publish my work in Lambert Academic Publishing.
Are they predatory publishers ? Thanks for advice.

Here is the email :

Dear K Nishimwe,

I would like to inquire whether you considered my offer to publish your work as a printed book.

May I send you a brochure in PDF format about the services of our publishing house?

Looking forward to hearing back from you, K Nishimwe.
Sincere regards,

Lambert is not a predatory publisher by definition, but it is a publisher that most will probably want to avoid. They want you to sign over the copyright of your thesis or dissertation to them, and they will re-package it as an e-book for sale on Amazon and perhaps elsewhere. In most cases, I think the terms are unfavorable to the author, and generally few if any copies are printed and sold, except perhaps to the author himself. I recommend finding a better publishing option for your work. Good luck.

Why all the questions? If you don’t even know whether a journal is a respected journal in your field, then either it is not or you are not familiar with your field.

I agree. Moreover, one would hope that academics would know enough about their area to ignore any nonsense that might be included in Google results. However, librarians tend to be of a different view. When one came to our department meeting she seemed surprised that most of us used Google Scholar rather than the library’s resource for searching.

After an embargo period, journals often do allow authors to post pre-print and/or post-print versions of their papers so I don’t know if it is fair to say “pirated”.

I have the <em>International Research Journal of Engineering and Technology</em> included on my list <a href="http://scholarlyoa.com/individual-journals/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">here </a>. I recommend that researchers NOT submit papers to this journal. Instead, I recommend they find a stronger journal.

These journals are published by Symbiosis (Symbiosis Online Publishing). This publisher is included on my list. The impact factors they claim are false. None of the Symbiosis journals has a legitimate impact factor.

Regarding number one, this is not a predatory journal/publisher. Regarding number 2, this is a case of journal hijacking. There is a legitimate version of this journal (and it's not predatory), and there is a hijacked version of it. I have the hijacked version included on my list <a href="http://scholarlyoa.com/other-pages/hijacked-journals/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">here</a>. Thanks.
