Joro, why are you disappointed? Scopus is owned by Elsevier Ltd. Surely Elsevier should be labelled as “predatory” too, for supporting “predators”?

“In the case of predatory journals, a misled author is someone who published a few paper in such venues. However I would assume that an author who published mainly in predatory journals AND can not show a solid record of publishing in legit journals recognized by the scientific community is rather a accomplice than a victim.” So, Janos, how do you explain research institutes that reward their scientists who publsh mainly in predatory journals?

Comment on Ivy Union Publishing: A Publisher to Avoid by JanosToth
If I go full bona fide then I would explain it with different research cultures. After all, who am I (or Mr Beall, or the whole western research community etc.) to prescribe to anyone how should they reward their employees? They could even base promotions on lottery drawings if they want to, and if that is not something which is against the accepted social norms of that specific research environment.
There are other plausible explanations, of course, like corruption, utter incompetence, politics and games in academia, or any combinations of the above. It could equally happen that a research institution simply does not have enough researchers who are able to publish in legit international journals, but they have tu crunch out the right numbers to their government/funding agency in the end-year report, so they knowingly let people being rewarded after their publications in predatory journals. Who knows.

World Science Journal is a kind of predatory. It says the magazine published by World Science Journals in United Kingdom, however, the whois ip tools said it is from Provo, UT 84606, US (http://cqcounter.com/whois/). Moreover, there is no editor boards. That is so suspicious!

I recommend that you not submit any papers to Frontiers. It’s a very expensive publisher. This publisher regularly has new scandals, and these scandals will reflect poorly on your choice of publisher, even though it’s very easy to get published in their journals; they hate to reject anything.

it’s an interesting discussion though. In the issue of academic cultures, it seems that the majority of these predatory journals are in the sciences, particularly the health sciences. The humanities seem to be in a minority. Why would this be?

Is this a new publisher? I looked in the publisher’s list but didn’t see it listed. They offer publication 3 days after receiving the manuscript.

Because health sciences researchers often have grant money that they can use to pay the author fees.

Dear Mr Beall,
What do you think about the British Journal of Medicine and Medical Research, published by Science Domain International (http://www.sciencedomains.org/journal/12)? I do not find this publisher on your list.
Interestingly, the journal title is quite similar to a standalone predatory journal in your list. [British Journal of Medical and Health Research (BJMHR)]. If the former is a predatory journal, is it a case of a predator preying on another predator?
