Comment on Open-Access Journal Offers to Pay Peer Reviewers by Akhlesh Lakhtakia

1. Minimal copy-editing is done by American Physical Society and Elsevier (among major publishers).
2. Non-native English speakers should either learn to write well in English or have their manuscripts professionally edited or publish in journals published in other languages.

I am dissatisfied by PLoS and will not publish with it for this very reason. The latest paper, a meta-analysis, that I read in my field not only had terrible gaffes in the list of references but also listed and analyzed a European country as being part of Asia. Thus errors also exist in scientific contents, not just language. Errors like that lead to loss of credibility on the entire meta-analysis that after all necessitates that the authors carefully extract and cite the literature their analysis is based on. PLoS is also contributing to the declining standard of scholarly publishing.

I stand by my lists. The Journal of Scientific Research and Development is on the list for good reasons, as is MedWell.

You are free to ignore my lists and send your work to low-quality publishers. It’s your choice.

Dear Dr. Beall,
may you please check and clarify the Sport Science journal and comment on its quality and merit? He is indexed in Scopus database.

Dear Dr. Beall, I know than journal is in your list, but as I wrote the journal has SJR index as well as is indexed in Scopus database. Is it possible?

Yes. SJR is meaningless.
Scopus sometimes makes mistakes.

Dear Dr. and what is the true reason for including this journal on your list?It means that Scopus doesn’t work well (over 4 years has this journal SJR index) I am young researcher and SCOPUS database is acceptable for my university. Thank so much Dr. for your replay.

I had not heard of this publisher / conference organizer before, so thank you for alerting me to it.
It’s fishy. It meets the criteria, and I have added it from my list. I think it’s not really from Australia. The address they give is that of a dwelling (in Australia), but it’s probably really based in Malaysia. No Australians have published in either of its two journals. If they are dishonest about their origin, they are probably dishonest about other things as well. I recommend abandoning this company and finding an authentic, respected publisher for your work.

Comment on OMICS Group Now Charging for Article Withdrawals by Dante

I submitted a manuscript to one of the omics journals. Before it was published I received an invoice and an email notifying me I had 48 hours to make any changes before publication. At this point, I asked them to withdraw the article. They proceeded to publish the article anyway, and assign a doi as I later discovered when they sent me another email with an invoice and the doi.
I referred them back to the fact that I had asked them to withdraw before they had published, and they are conveniently ignoring that fact. Of course they sent me another invoice with a withdrawal fee.
I am at a loss of what to do because my aticle is now freely available.

It rather depends on whether you want the book of your thesis to have any credibility whatsoever, and to be of any use in getting academic jobs. This is not a matter of snobbery; proper publishers will have other experts read your work, question it where necessary, proof it so there aren’t mistakes in the writing etc etc. To be honest, having it published by Lambert is no different from taking it to your local photocopying house and running them off yourself, or putting a pdf online; no-one will read, review or trust your work, and if you include it on an academic CV it is likely that your job application will go in the bin.

FYI, I recently received two emails from what I think is probably another VDM publishing name, which claims to specialise in books on Jewish culture, history etc. It claimed that they have read my work in the Journal of Modern Jewish Studies (a reputable academic journal) and that they wanted to publish a collection of my works. This was obviously rubbish, as my published work (so far) in this journal consists of a single 500-word book review – hardly the basis of a collection! They’ve obviously just gone through the list of contributors and sent a copy-paste email to all, regardless of actual output.

Many others have been victimized by OMICS in exactly the same way. There is no easy solution.

Dear Dr. Beall, I expected from you only advice on possible justifications. The young researcher can easily become a victim of poor quality scientific journals. Now I’m confused. On the one hand you have this journal on the list of the magazine and on the other hand supports me in terms of it. I apologize that I wanted more justification how the “great scientific world” in terms of publishing in the sciences, sport (where opportunities for this area is not much). Now is the question “Publish or perish? What you mean?
Anyway, thank you for your comment and your time.
