Thank you for this. I just recently followed your blog, but I’ve been reading on it for a while now. I’m not a researcher or super proficient in reading studies, but this has helped me extensively in finding reliable resources and staying away from others. I like debunking pseudoscientific things, and your blog has been such a necessary help. ^.^ I’m sure others get even more use out of it than I do. Thank you so, so much for this ^.^
Have a beautiful day sunshine!

This is (or was) the Advanced Institute of Convergence Information Technology (AICIT). It is included on my list of publishers. I cannot access the site right now. I searched “aicit” in Google, and it says, “This site may be hacked.”

What a coincidence! Only yesterday I checked my spam folder and found an invitation to contribute to Clinical Psychiatry, iMedPub’s latest aspirational imprint… although the link in the e-mail leads to a different journal, International Journal of Anesthesiology & Pain Medicine (they don’t seem to work very hard to customise the spam).

The Assistant Editor prefers the anonymity of an initial rather than a last name, because that really shouts out ‘credibility’ and ‘integrity’:

Kavya M
One Commerce Center 1201
Orange St #600 | City Wilmington
Delaware | USA

But after the discouragingly florid beginning to the message, I was not inclined to put much credence into the Delaware address:

Greetings!!!
Hope you are doing well!!!
We are glad to find you here.

Well, yes, I am glad to find me here too.

Everything on the webpage was plagiarised shamelessly from other sources, except the “Recommended Conferences” list, which proves to be devoted entirely to OMICS mockademic meetings. In fact I’d go as far as to suggest that OMICS is shifting focus to the Scam Conference as a primary revenue racket, and that the iMedPub stable of websites put more emphasis on advertising the conferences than on soliciting publication fees.

I wouldn’t put much credence into that address either. Their US address in Delaware belongs to an LLC formation group (https://www.incnow.com) and their UK address in London, found on the ‘contact us’ page, belongs to a company that provides virtual office addresses and accompanying Post Boxes (http://www.freeindex.co.uk/profile(prime-secretarial-services)_308230.htm). The phone number for the DE address is one commonly used by other journals belonging to OMICS and has an area code for Nevada. Of course, the actual site, is hosted by the IP address 182.18.136.108 in Telangana, Hyderabad, India.

In regards to the dubious nature of imed.pub and some of its previous connections to Insight Medical Publishing, I’d recommend reading the blog post by Matt Hodgkinson about imed.pub’s possible sock puppetry, stock photos, and other questionable practices, if you haven’t already:

Comment on Guest Editing a Special Issue with MDPI: Evidences of Questionable Actions by the Publisher by Ananish Chaudhuri

I would like to add my two cents to the comments made by Paul Vaucher. I am currently acting as Editor in Chief of a special issue of the journal GAMES (Economics and Game Theory) published by MDPI. I am just about the wrap up the issue. The issue received 17 submissions, almost all of which were quite high quality. I have accepted ten of these. My impression is that – yes, some of the reservations expressed here may be valid – but a lot of this depends on the editor.

One thing that the editorial office does and which I actually appreciated is an extremely hands on refereeing process. When a paper came in they asked me if I had suggestions for reviewers. The ones I suggested were always invited. However, in many cases, not all of them agreed to serve as referees or else they did not respond in a timely manner. At that point the managing editor (who I found to be extremely conscientious and efficient) went ahead and using keyword searches looked for additional referees till they found at least two – and in some cases three – referees. With few exceptions, I was aware of the research done by the referees who were chosen and in ALL cases I received reports that were extremely thorough.

There was one early hiccup where, for the very first submission to the special issue, after the first set of referee reports came in the authors were asked to undertake a revision without my input. I think this is the point where the Editor’s stand becomes crucial. It would have been easy for me to simply go with the flow but I made it absolutely clear that henceforth I wanted to see the reports and make ALL decisions.

From that point on the process unfolded EXACTLY like it does at other highly reputable journals where I am involved in Editorial capacity. The papers were sent out for review – with the caveat that the referees were not always the ones I chose but this did speed up turn around times which is a good thing. Once the reports came in, I read them and decided how to proceed.

Most of the papers that were accepted went through at least two rounds of revisions and in some cases more. I believe this is NOT the preferred approach of the journal which suggests a single round of revision or rejection to keep things moving. But no one interfered with my decisions or showed any reluctance or raised objections when I asked for multiple rounds of revisions.

After the early mishap, I found the process professional, efficient and in no way different to my experience at other well known journals. I have no hesitation is saying that the papers I accepted are all high quality and would have been able to make their way into better known journals. I was happy that they had chosen to submit it to the special issue; maybe hoping for a quick turn-around in a discipline (Economics) where long publication lags are typical. In fact I found the process more efficient than at other journals mostly because of the managing editor’s hands on approach with referees; sending out regular reminders and keeping me updated as to what was happening.

So in conclusion, my impression is that the journal GAMES published by MDPI seems to work exactly like other well-reputed journals; however, if the Editor in charge wishes to slack off then it is possible to do so with the editorial office picking up the slack. This is not desirable but then the problem may lie with people who agree to take this on as an easy line on their line on the resume but are not willing to put in the hard yards. So yes, seems like there my be scope for abusing the system but the responsibility seems to lie more with academics who are unwilling to discharge their responsibilities fully rather than a publisher who may be willing to enable that shirking.

Of course, this is based on my experience at GAMES and the situation may well be different at other journals.

As for me, would I submit to GAMES? Yes. Would I encourage others to do so? Yes.

Thanks Jeffrey. I would like to mention one important point that most of the time people check journal’s name in the list of standalone journals rather than publisher’s list. Sometime they do not find name of a predatory journal even the publisher’s name of the journal exists in your publisher’s list. This can misguide people and they may consider a predatory journal a legitimate journal. In my opinion journal names as well as publisher names must explicitly be displayed in parallel so people do not go astray.

Comment on OMICS Group Aims to Trick Researchers with Copycat Journal Titles by Brett Snodgrass, MD

Many journal names sound similar. They are copycat naming, but all the good names are taken. I reviewed a manuscript for one of their journals. It doesn’t seem like a scam, but more of a startup. People are afraid of change, so if it bothers you, don’t go for it. They have a long way to go to catch up to the lancet, but they will likely moving up in quantity and quality as well as getting more journals in PubMed. Their open access fee is cheaper than an Elsevier journal.

Dear Professor:

Thank you very much for listing all these predators journals with so-called “open access type”. A single publication in such a journal is sufficient to ruin one’s career.

As per me, even if someone is going for open access, he/she should go for top publishers such as IEEE, Springer, Elsevier, Wiley, ACS, T&F etc. (OR) One should check properly whether the journal is indexed with Science Citation Index/Scopus.

I have also seen some OA journal which claim that those guys are listed in Scopus/SCI, but when I went through the journal list released by these top indexing bodies (Scopus, SCI, Thomson Reuters etc.), I could not find the claiming predators.

So, in this era of research, one MUST be utmost careful for before sending a valuable manuscript to a venue else all the efforts and ideas will get into hell.

Thanks again for posting the list. That’s a whole lot of effort by you.

Hats Off!

Regards,
Tirtharaj

Dear Jeffrey Beall

I represent International Journal of Clinical and Diagnostic Research as an executive editor. Earlier in one of the comments Dr Gaurav raised question about our journal for which you responded that this journal has articles which were plagiarized. I was actively screening the articles in this journal for plagiarism since 2015. I would sincerely like to inform you that we stand for ethical scientific publication with no interest in publication fees except to run the journal.

When you say “since 2015” what do you mean exactly? Since yesterday? Since January 1st? Why are you giving such ambiguous information?

Also, what plans does the journal have to deal with the existing plagiarism found among the articles? Will you be retracting the articles? Issuing corrections?
