Comment on Avestia Publishing: A New Bottom-Tier Publisher from Canada by Jeffrey Beall

Whenever I see a publisher that uses deception or lack of transparency, I become very concerned about the quality of the publisher. For example, when a publisher uses fake personal names to sign its spam, when it hides or misrepresents its location, or it hides information about who is behind the operation and what their experience with scholarly publishing is, then I see problems that are likely emblematic of how the publisher will operate. I’ve seen many new scholarly “publishers” set up their websites in a single day, using templates for each of their journals, copying information from other publishers to populate the text on their websites. These small instances of cheating add up to a lot. Why should scholars submit papers to a publisher that uses made-up personal names, hides or misrepresents its true location, and copies author guidelines from another publisher? I don’t think they should, so I hope to warn people away from them.

We are aware at the BCSS of this fake website using our name BRADLEYA which has been in existance for over 30 years. I am not aware of anyone informing us previously of its existance. So far we have been unable to find a way o have it shut down.

This example clearly implicates that lack of credible peers, reviewing manuscripts prior to their acceptance, among predatory publishers.

In such a case, it would be better to retract the PI rather than the papers he published.

Hi Jeff, libertas Academica was listed in your list in 2010. What made you remove that publisher from your list now?

ISRN invited me to publish for free in their ISRN Economics. The requirement was to submit the paper within a certain time period which I did. After about a week of submission, I was asked to transfer my paper to ISRN Education due to content of the paper. They required my response within 24 hours, so I agreed to it in a rush as I was busy with other projects at the time. Then ISRN accepted our paper and said that there will be a $500 processing fee, which I am refusing to pay as I was invited to publish for free to begin with. Their reason is that because my paper has been transferred to a different journal and not the initial one that invited me. This is a scam and they are still harassing me for the $500.

Thanks for sharing your experience with Hindawi. This may be a case of bait-and-switch.

They improved, changed some of their practices. The owner asked me to have another look and I did and found it no longer met the criteria.

Thanks Jeff. I always felt that LA was a nice journal. I didn’t fina any problem in their review and infact they where strict in my reviews. Some one has to remove the statement in wikipedia about LA being a predatory journal

It’s not on the list at this time, but I have not heard of this journal before, so please give me some time to have a look at it (a week at least). Thanks.
