Comment on A Publisher with no Website: Science and Engineering Publishing Company by lightforest

I’m sorry to tell you the truth that this fraud Science and Engineering Publishing Companyhttp://www.seipub.org/ is still running now in Wuhan, China.

i was recently recruited by this company as a college graduate, totally blank with company business. several days later, i questioned and realized the illegality of that company and quit.

Feeling of rage lingers, still.

Comment on Fake Female Names Embellish Predatory Publishers’ Spam Emails by Stephen B

Please read the article before commenting – this article is about editorial assistants and those sending email invitations to submit articles. Clearly if you are a scientist, use of a real name matters a lot more – although there are many, many examples of professionals (never read a book by an author using a pseudonym?) using false names for legitimate reasons (William Sealy Gosset is a good example).

That is the only link I have I’m afraid.

By the way, you have also highlighted this journal(and it’s publisher – AENSI) as a suspect journal and dodgy publisher, in your August 2013 list.

Can it be there is a legitimate Australian Journal of Basic and Applied Sciences and a fake one?

Thank you for your time.

That journal is published by Textroad Journals, and this publisher is on my list. I recommend that you find a better journal/publisher.

That journal is not an open-access journal (although it is a hybrid journal). I normally limit my analyses to OA journals and publishers. Having said that, I think this is a fine journal.

Three real-life scenarios:

1. As an Indian graduate student in the US, I met a number of Chinese students who had adopted a Western nickname. But this name never replaced their real name in emails. To present oneself in writing only with a nickname or false name is not the same as adopting a nickname to fit in a foreign country. The first practice is fraud; the second is to integrate in society.

2. I worked for a few months in a large American technology company with lots of Indians, and many of them were from south India — the home of very long, cumbersome names. They proudly used their full names or shortened forms and never adopted Western names. They were respected for their work and didn’t have to fight some imagined prejudice.

3. The sordid IT staffing industry in the US is full of Indians with fake Western names. Why? They are not respected for their work, and all they can hope for is to fool people into thinking they are not Indian.

The third scenario is what we’re seeing with predatory publishers, not the first or second.

Publishing is not Hollywood or Bollywood, where actors are bestowed new screen names if their real names are not charming or appealing.

1. The publisher harvests email addresses and then sends personalized spam, praising a researcher’s earlier work and inviting another, without mentioning the fees and with the use of fake names (Ms. Ivy)
2. Many of the journal titles are unidiomatic. Examples include Global Perspective on Engineering Management (should be Perspectives) and Review of Psychology Frontier (which makes no sense in English). If the publisher chooses to publish in English, then it needs to hire consultants to make its webpage have correct usage. Otherwise, this sends a signal to potential contributors that the site does not care about quality and may accept all papers that are submitted
3. Presence of plagiarism in the articles (email me for details).
4. The article template seems to be largely copied from a template available on the web called, “Word template for the IEEE International Conference on Advanced Research in Engineering & Technology (ICARET-12)”. Also, it appears that the publisher is using the “IEEE Paper Template in A4 (V1).” Did the publisher get permission to copy and use these templates?
5. It is unclear what the difference in the roles between the editorial board members and the reviewers is.
6. What is the publisher’s relationship with American V-King Scientific Publishing?
7. Unclear who owns the operation or whether it’s for profit or not.

Thank you, Agustin. I have not heard of this journal before. I will conduct a full analysis. I am very suspicious because this journal has only published a few issues, yet it’s main page says, “Impact Factor: 1.659.” This is not possible, and I think they are being deceptive. Thanks again, Jeffrey Beall

Comment on Icelandic Journal Latest Victim of Journal Hijacking by JATdS

If the journal carries an ISSN number, and there is clear proof that this is a fraudulent hijacking, then why isn’t the ISSN responsible for removing or withdrawing the ISSN number? Clearly the ISSN is being used as a form of validation. Secondly, the original jorunal title is Jokull. The “impostor” is “Jokull Journal”. Similar is not the same as identical.

Good questions. First, enforcing the use of ISSN numbers is not within the scope or responsibility of ISSN agencies. Second, while your observation that the two titles are not identical is true, I think that there is malicious intent on the part of those stealing the authentic journal’s identity. They must answer to this intent.
