Comment on Appeals by Jeffrey Beall

It’s on my list for these (and other) reasons:

Non standard licensing (send an email if you intend to use it elsewhere)
The APCs are not mentioned anywhere.
Prominent poor grammar on the site, including the publisher’s “editorial”
Strange, he sells subscriptions ($100) even though the journal is OA.
The editorial board members are listed without any affiliations
It appears to be a vanity press that authors use to get yearly academic credits — From FAQ:
“Q. How many points in API will i get if published in an article in The Criterion?
Ans: For Journals with ISSN you get 10 points but if your article is published in The Criterion you can get 15 points for it is an International, refereed, Indexed and Peer-reviewed Journal (according to UGC guidelines).”

These are minor issues. You should encourage such initiative. Its a new journal and let it go up the learning curve rather than defaming it.

We all owe a great deal to Jeffrey Beall and Dr. Sawitzke for this expose. It was fascinating reading–and very shocking to see scientists being treated so shabbily. Thank you both for such a detailed, absorbing, damning report.

Mr. Beall, I am happy to see a new watchdog like, Thomson Reuters, Scopus’s SCImago, during my online search for reliable sources. I am happy that this market is growing. They are offering SNIP indicator. Please visit http://www.journalindicators.com/

Dr. Seyyed Akbar Mirhasani (Tarbiat Modares University, Iran), Dr Parviz Birjandi (Islamic Azad University, Iran), and Dr Zohreh Eslami Rasekh (Texas A&M University, USA) are more or less of the same habit. Almost all academic members of the Islamic Azad University (Iran) find this strategy quite valuable. Moreover, an indexing service called ISC has been launched by Dr Jafar Mehrad which claims to be the Islamic version of the ISI list and indexes almost any predatory journal that pays the guy a high amount of money. A professor who has written on this issue to warn the Ministry of Science, Research and Technology in Iran, has been persecuted, his associationship has been suspended, and he has been told that he has to quit his job.

OMICs did a single mistake: to ask to Dr Sawitzke for feedback about the meeting.

Wow, even with western education this things still happen. That affects every legitimate researcher from Iran, just what happened with the south korean researcher who lied about his stem cells research

Are you sure about this publisher? Some of what Arif mentions is incorrect – the publisher does not use Yahoo, but uses an email address @asian-efl-journal.com, as you would expect. In addition, although the Journal of Law and Linguistics is somewhat questionable, does this really qualify it as predatory?

I say this because the Asian EFL Journal is a well-respected journal in my field (TESOL), coming high up on the list best journals in TESOL, so I’m surprised to see it on the list.

Keep up the great work!

I’m one of those idiots who recently ‘registerd’ to publish my thesis with LAP – I’m wondering whether I’m now bound to that?! Any thoughts?

Did you sign over your copyright on the thesis? If so, it may be difficult to get it back. Good luck.

Thank you for your response Jeffrey; their terms and conditions say that authors keep their copyright but ‘give up the rights to duplication and dissemination of the work’ – you don’t actually sign anything – it just said: ‘Please click on the following link to register and accept our terms and conditions’. I’m waiting for their response.

No — this journal’s publisher — International Association for Engineering and Management Education — is included on my list here: http://scholarlyoa.com/publishers/

I recommend that you find a better journal. Thanks.
