Having read dozens of papers from Elsevier journals from my sub-field of computer science, I can honestly say that your judgement of Procedia applies to their Journals as well. Apart from Ad Hoc Networks it seems to be the rule that an Elsevier article is poor quality. Of course there are exceptions, but they are rare. As for the Procedia titles; I’m wondering, is there a proper TPC and such for the conference, or is it organized from the Elsevier side? My understanding of the way conference proceedings work is that apart from a “publish/not publish” decision, the publishers don’t really have direct influence on the work. They’re not part of TPC meetings, so it might not be entirely Elsevier’s fault in this case.

Good points and good questions. I’ve also noticed a drop in the copy-editing quality in one of their library science journals. I think your final statement is correct — Elsevier is merely serving as the publisher for a bunch of conferences, but as is evident from the “aliens” article I referred to in the blog post, they seem to be publishing anything and everything, including pseudo-science.

As far as I know, Jeffrey Beall has always put his name to his comments here, made available his research publication history and along the way incidentally laid himself open to legal attack, anonymous abuse and orchestrated online campaigns against him.

Speaking about pseudoscience … what do You think about the neuroquantology journal? (it is not open access and is not asking for payments). Just one example: http://www.neuroquantology.com/index.php/journal/article/view/571 (the article is with open access). The journal is indexed by Scopus and also it is with impact factor … (You will have some fun :) )

Hi Jeffrey,
I noted that Clute Institute is on your list of questionable publishers. I have published with them a couple of times (and paid a fee) and currently have two new articles accepted, each charging a fee. They were submitted before I saw your website and list. Much about the publisher seems fine according to your list of criteria. I am not sure why it is on your list… Should I send an email to them asking what they think about this?

Clute’s fees seem high (i.e. $450 for 6-10 pages). And they have recently instituted a review charge, for usual and for expedited. Are paying fees always a problem?

The review process might be suspect: For one journal, I received actual feedback, but it was primarily about sentence completion and structure, not about content. For the other, it was accepted as is.

I have searched your website for any mention by anyone of experiences or opinions about Clute, but have not found anything. Can you advise?
Thanks,
Elizabeth

Hi, Elizabeth, You are welcome to send them an email. I have had many (cordial) exchanges with Dr. Clute. Fees in themselves are not a criterion for determining whether a publisher is predatory, but the submission fees (and the expedited fee) are questionable. Those fees aren’t actually that high in comparison. I agree with the rest of your analysis. Jeffrey

That’s the address of the Market Street Mailbox & Shipping Center, and the name at the end, Kristi Brunet, is also fake. Pretty much everything about this publisher is fake.

Given that according to WorldCat only one library in the world has the technical paper (Netherlands), I’m curious about how you discovered this! –SAriew

Actually, I see three records in OCLC with a total of eight holdings, OCLC record numbers 57443476, 750646431, and 241475584. I learned about it through a tip. Apparently there is spamming in Iran occurring for this hijacked journal.

WorldCat is plagued by duplicate records.

Thank you very much for this alert I am so grateful because I happen to have sent a paper to them for publication and I discovered that the paper was only rearranged and not reviewed at all they now asked me to pay for publication. I then discovered that the Bank address was based in China. What a fraudulent publishing house! I will have to resend my paper to a reputable International Journal on my field. Thanks once again for this information.

What is paining you Mr Be all is that all you want is that people publish in your western based journals where papers from third world country are often refused. I tried once and I know that my paper was better than that of many over there. The problem is that I was sending my paper from Africa. Stop then the scienficoracism you are doing. I publish in Elsevier or springer but I need to pay to get access to my own paper. How would you call that. Look at the papers submitted to medwells are all from poor countries. The so called “good journals” refuse our papers. So we go to where they are accepted.
I think the main reason of journals is to spread knowledge. You should question yourself and the editors of the journals you seem todefend if they have reached that goal.
Best regards

Don’t know about other issues your pointed out, this web domain (behaviorsciences [dot] com) is registered for 14 years in the name of Mr. Patrice C. Mahon having address SECRETARIAT PACIFIC COMMUNITY, BP D5, NOUMEA, NEW CALEDONIA, France. The domain has good online credibility as well. If the domain name is registered under the original owner and Thomos Reuters is reporting same ISSN, than how could it be hijacked? I think you are on mistake!
