Did you notice that both versions of the International Journal of Science and Technology seem to have many members of their editorial boards in common? Suspicious….

if your paper is accepted in the journals of this publisher, you should pay money, but they didn’t state that in their site…
all of these journals are fake, look at the list of papers, you can find more than three paper from the same author in one issue, it seems that these authors should be a prominent scholar in their field!!!
at the other hand, many of Iranian faculty member use these journals to promote their position…
they ruined the science, not growing it….

The exclusion criteria of ISSN says “personal resources (personal web sites and web pages, online diaries)”. I think if ISSN acts on this that would be a good beginning to check the ‘weed like’ growth of humbug online publishing.

The ISSN is a farse and is in collusion with the predators. How else would you explain their dishing out ISSN numbers faster than water to drought-stricken vitims? Why don’t you test my theory, Mr. Krishnakumar and contact your Indian and international ISSN centers and place a formal complaint. Then, please do come back to us with a response… once again, cheap talk from an Indian, but no pro-active action.

Many MSc and PHD students get sucked into the VDM-LAP scam. They desperately need publications early on in their career. A book sounds like a nice choice, + one free full-colour copy, in hard-copy. Plus the advertising on Amazon with a small cut of the profits (apparently never paid out). Which junior budding scientists would refuse this offer? Publication of MSc and PhD theses in academic journals and then recycled in “academic” books published by VDM-LAP constitutes the biggest fraudulent scam in publishing history, and ironically with the biggest growth and profits. Not to mention it constitutes self-plagiarism in its worst form. The questions we should be asking is, how can this be legal in Germany? Or is the predatory publishing model indicative of something wider taking place in the dark world of science publishing? Remember, Springer also operates from Germany. Is there some sort of a two-tier legal system, or are we all just being duped from the elitist publishers right down to the “troll journals”, as described by a Taylor and Francis representative in another of Bealle’s blog entry? Open yoru eyes folks, things are getting too misty in the room…

Krishnakumar, the more I read your blog posts, the more I realize how stupid or ignorant you are. You are even encouraging the expansion of predatory OA journals. Please go ahead, bury yourself. Please research befor adding dubm-ass comments. You do little justice to India, you just confirm what we already know: India is the epicenter of fraud, unabashedly cloning it as the pillar of business entrepreneurship. The land of slumdog millionaires. We know how that ends…

This whole discussion is so petty. So what if the US has some “conscience”? No-one believes the US anyway. A fraud leads the USA and the USA is a leader in fraud. So why should anyone believe the US or anything its academics have to say? The NIH is in collusion with PubMed, and with so-called “ethical bodies”, whose management is run by ex-executives from top publishers like Elsevier and BMC. So corruption runs deep in the US, and so does convenience. Elsevier pays the US goverment millions in legalized bribes (sorry, “campaign contributions”). Folks, you can all install all these kangaroo courts in your departments, block this and interpret that, but until your tackle the true rot, the true predators, then this blog, your wishy-washy claims to action and some fruitless attempt to reign in predator OA, will all be in vain. 90% or more of predatory OA publishers originate from India, Iran, Egypt, NIgeria, Pakistan. Can you not see the axis of evil here? When in doubt, seek the common thread. The only reason why you see predatory OA publishers springing up in Canada is because of the low tax rate (15%), in the US, because it is easy to establish a business with just a PO Box (e.g., in Delaware), or in other countries because some Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi, Egyptian, Iranian or Nigerian has set up shop in his apartment and all he/she needs is a server and some basic web-based skills. There are thousands of free templates on the market just waiting to be filled in with fraudulent information. Ignorance about local and international events, the inability to link the dots that cover much more than the world of publishing is going to make this blog and its efforts as useless as the stupid boycott against Elsevier, based on unfair profits, because Elsevier will just simply buy-out the competition or silence the lambs. A predatory OA running from the slums of Dhaka or Lagos wil not be perturbed by what you do in Western Illinois University. The fight needs to be taken to the ISSN, to the top-tier publishers, to Google, to Yahoo. You are looking at the dusk in the soil. Time to look at the bigger picture…

Frank, I contacted the ISO about this. They were so startled, the vice president or someone really high up responded to my query. The attribution of an ISO is purely voluntary. Apparently there are about 10,000 categories of ISO, you somehow just spun off some silly number you probably read off the back of a pick-up truck. Although a good business model for ISO, so I don’t see them turning away applications that would hurt their bottom line. So, I consider the ISO to be in collusion with the predators. Is any business truly clean? Finally, a trick question. If the IMpact Factor is the maximum level of quality in science (apparently), why does it NOT have an ISO? Now that is food for thought… You want to be smart, ask Thomson Reuters… and then link what it is that these predatory OA publishers are truly after… link the dots, and I don’t mean the three dots following the 9…

I am curious if you believe this to be primarily an education problem or simply a failure of law enforcement in international communities?

How much will predatory OA journals set back the OA paradigm as a whole?

I never claim I am the most enlightened in OA. The present system (none) allows anyone to start a OA publication. Thats it. I suggest you avoid remarks that appear more racist than intellectual. I am here to learn too. You are severely distorted in your logic. I am sorry.

Robin, what have you written new here other than rewriting Bealle’s report in your own fascist choice of words. If you are a true scholar you would not allow anyone to prey on you. I belong to this. Whom do you want to blame here or what do you want to convey? Is that the desperation, or the incompetence of their supervisors or what? Plagiarism is a serious issue, but not starting a OA journal. Right now the only way one can fix these unscrupulous OAs are based on plagiarism and not ISSN. You claim you contacted ISO, yet you ended up attacking a blogger personally as stupid and ignorant. May be you will claim in your next blog that you spoke to the US president and allege that he also colludes with OA tricksters. Next time you blog, mind your words. I find your blogs a perfect case for racist abuse and uethical writing. I wont respond to you any further as it would amount to demeaning Dr.Bealle’s efforts. I am not a chicken dear Robin. I am from the land of the Buddha. Next time before you write ‘meditate’.

The problem is that we have people entering the scholarly publishing industry without sufficient experience and without sufficient attention paid to following industry standards. They either don’t know how to run a publishing operation professionally or they don’t care.

Predatory journals are eroding the entire scholarly communication system, and as you say, setting back the OA paradigm. The extent is unsure. The worst thing is the damage that is being done to the communucation of science itself.

The following speaks more than what can be described in words.

A faculty member of Koneru Lakshmaiah University (aka Knowledge Leadership University), Vijayawada, india, proudly discloses the following letter in the university’s website.

I don’t think a faculty member in the Dept. of Biotechnology of a University would be unaware of the facts about interesjournal(s). But what made him boldly disclose it in the website? In case he is genuinely unaware, that raises lot more questions!

The letter is as seen in the university’s website http://www.kluniversity.in/rnews.aspx?id=2071

However, I have withdrawn his name below not to embarass him in this forum. Faculty members might get some points for such reviewership in journals and possibly help overtake his colleague during performance evaluation. When it comes to promotions colleagues are often considered rivals.

Krishnakumar, please explain, in some detail, what Buddhism and Hinduism say about deceipt, dishonesty, fraud and corruption. After you found the answer, I suggest you shut up with your ignorant retorts. The fake Diwali’s and the plastic e-mails of enlightenment are a smoke screen for a nation that is rife with corruption, steeped in greed for a quick run at money and success. But always having the indiscrete gall to mask it in the “goodness” of Buddha. Only fools turn to their fake gods to secure their insecurites. No different among scientists. One more thing, the rest of the wordl is tired of Indian crocodile tears of being a developing nation, sucking dry funds from developed nations while funds are being used by corrupt Indian officials. No wonder the masses of scientists are corrupt when their leaders show no example. Your ignorance about even your own country is so deep, it amazes me how you even found yourself to this site. Right now, after the US empire crashes, the world had better look out for India, for it poses a serius threat to the integrity of science and all issues related to society, the environment and the economy. PS; I regularly get e-mails from Barack and Michele, but I dont think he has time to colude with OA tricksters, he is too busy colluding with Wall Steet tricksters like Blakefine. That’s hardly surprising given that the main page of that university’s web site has a “Research bulletin” section containing a list of announcements of the type “X and Y, Dept. Z, have authored a paper and was (sic) published in International Journal J”. I wouldn’t be surprised if many of these journals are gold OA. Are the university’s management unaware that his kind of competition will obviously have disastrous effects on the quality of research, or do they simply not care?

Dear Dr.Bealle,
I hope your blog comments are moderated and inappropriate comments are rejected. I am sorry to say that the above comment by “Robin Hood” smacks of racial and regional intolerance. Appropriate action must be taken otherwise serious academics would lose interest in this wonderful effort of yours.
