Is it possible to professionally write and distribute your research without the likes of Research Media? Isn’t this the value these businesses offer. Did you receive distribution statistics from Research Media?

[…] Jeffrey Beall, a librarian at the University of Colorado – Denver, has put together a useful list that is continually updated: “Potential, possible, or probable predatory scholarly open-access publishers.” It’s worth consulting when you see a CFP just to educate yourself on any possibilities – and to inquire further yourself if necessary. Remember to not necessarily search for the name of the journal, but for the publisher name. http://scholarlyoa.com/publishers/ […]

That journal is published by Sophia Publishing Group Inc., and this publisher is NOT on my list. I think this journal is okay, and it's nice to see a specialized journal like this. I think it's better to have a journal like this one than to have a journal title such as the Journal of Plant Science Research.

This reminds me of a situation back in 1966, when someone actually stole a thesis, waiting to be bound, and used it as the basis for several articles published in Applied Optics.

As long as the paper is not in the public domain, the student is offered co-authorship (and all contributors properly acknowledged), all authors substantially contributed both to the experiment and to the writing, and all authors agree with the final submitted version of the paper, then that should not be any problem at all.
If the thesis is public, I guess the journal should be informed of that circumstance during submission, but I don’t think a thesis would have to pose a problem if printed on a small scale.
I suppose, however, you mean that the supervisor is allowed to do as (s)he pleases with the results when the student has left the research group: that is definitely not acceptable.

Ambrose i am curious .. how did it end? was your paper published in this journal or not? before submission did they state that there were no publication fees? because what i am seeing on their web page is that some journals have no fees required and on the others they state the fee.

I understand. Except that using retractions as a data point would be problematic, as few predatory journals have retraction policies. They either leave the plagiarism there for all the world to see, or if pressured, they simply remove it tacitly.
