Comment on A Vanity Scholarly Press from Québec by Ruth E. Thaler-Carter

I was just invited to submit articles for publication from the “Edtior” of Canadian Social Science (CSS) (yes, the editor misspells “editor” in her e-mail address!), apparently published by “Canadian Academy of Oriental and Occidental Culture” (yes, “the” is missing from that part of the message).

The sender claims to have read my article in the magazine of the Society of Professional Journalists about freelancer ethics. I couldn’t tell if she wanted to reprint that article or for me to submit other works, but the quality of the English in the message made me unlikely to do either. The fact that she calls me “Professor” is to laugh – or sigh – as well.

I considered offering to let her reprint my article for $500, but was afraid it would get used, and I don’t think I want to be associated with this publication even if I did get paid, which I probably wouldn’t have anyhow. It might have made for some good follow-up conversations, though.
