I’m sure you are absolutely right about SPG being a bogus publisher and not being based in New York, but in general, be careful in linking that assumption with the accent of the person on the end of the phone! Just because someone doesn’t sound American doesn’t mean they’re not in the US, and just because a company uses a call centre in another country doesn’t mean the company’s HQ isn’t based somewhere entirely different. I was made redundant from a London-based journal publisher a few years ago because they decided to outsource nearly the entire editorial department to the Philippines. Just sayin’…

Dear Sir,
Could you please let me know if the journals Journal of Plant Physiology, World Journal of Microbiology and Biotechnology, Phytochemistry and PLoS ONE are predatory or not?

John

Your calculation is wrong. Most OA publishers with tens of journals normally have very few active journals.

PLOS ONE is not predatory. Can you send links for the the other titles so I can be sure I know exactly which journals you are talking about? Thanks.

If they are accepting credit cards, then can’t they be traced in this way? It’s hardly an anonymous payment method. Surely they are committing fraud. I don’t understand why this cannot be prevented? Why not report the fake journal to Visa and Mastercard?

Dear Sir,
I have recently stumbled upon this site, and I would like to thank you for the hard work you have put in to maintain it. I would kindly request you if you can guide me whether the following journal falls amongst the predatory ones or not: http://www.heraldopenaccess.us/journals.php

I am unable to decide, and I would be grateful for your guidance. Thanks

Yes, this is a publisher everyone should avoid, in my opinion. I have it included on my list here.

I had not heard of this publisher before, so thank you for alerting me to it. It’s a disaster. I have added it to my list and recommend that you not join any of its editorial boards and not submit papers to any of its journals.

Dear Professor Beall
Thank you so much for your response. I appreciate your advice. Do you have any list of good Journal outlets where somebody can publish Civil Engineering articles?. Is there any litmus test for good Journals?. I equally saw a journal named South Asian Journal of Engineering and Technology(SAJET) and I’m preparing to send my manuscript to them. What can you say about it?.

No, I limit my work to identifying low-quality and predatory journals. I do not identify or recommend good journals. The rule of thumb is to read a lot in you field and then you will be able to identify the top journals. You can also ask your colleagues and professors.

I think the journal you mentioned is not a high quality one. Have you ever read any of its articles. It appears to be published by a web design service company in India, not a good sign.

[…] One conference organiser in this ‘real but somewhat phony’ category (an Indian publishing house) responded to Beall’s blog by threatening to sue him for 1 billion dollars in damages. However, it never went to court. Later, the same publishing house took to charging scholars a fee of 419 USD if they pulled their manuscript…. […]

Journal of Tropical Forestry and Environment = This is from a publisher called Journals & Proceedings / University of Sri Jayewardenepura. While this publisher has some weaknesses, I don't think it's a predatory publisher. I personally would find a stronger publisher. Journal of Stored Products Research = not a predatory journal. Journal of Threatened Taxa = not a predatory journal. Current Science = not a predatory journal (but I do regularly receive inquires about it, an indication that some find it questionable). Journal of Microbiology and Biotechnology Research = If you mean the journal found here , from the publisher Scholars Research Library, then this publisher is included on my list here and should be avoided. Conservation Genetics = This title is published by Springer and is not a predatory journal Heartian Journal of Pure and Applied Sciences = This appears to be a journal published by Sacred Heart College in India's Kerala State ... the journal seems to have died (as many open-access journals do). So, you definitely don't want to submit anything to this one.

Proceed with much caution. This journal is published by Allied Academies, and this publisher is on my list. I recommend finding a stronger journal and publisher for your work.
