Comment on OMICS Goes from “Predatory Publishing” to “Predatory Meetings” by Sopia

Hi. I actually attended a very recent (July 2013) OMICS conference as a speaker and participant, and can honestly say that although it was expensive, it was worth it. Everything was arranged very well and the quality of talks were very good. I am from South Africa and it is not at all strange for us to pay a registration fee to speak at a professional congress. I had no problems with funds. There were about 6 congresses in the same hotel but they were all for different professional groups, so I don’t see the problem as each one were in its own location in the conference venue.

This is a big topic and one post cannot cover it all (as we see in these interesting comments), but the basic idea of measuring “impact” by the interest of others is sound. I’ve proposed a *difficult* to game method (with several other useful attributes) here: http://www.springerlink.com/content/2q80214867370564/

looks familar….received today

Some time ago I offered you the possibility of making your academic paper available as printed book. Since I did not hear back from you, I am now wondering if you received my first email.

I would appreciate if you could confirm your interest in our publishing house and I will be glad to provide you with detailed information about our services.

I am looking forward to receiving a positive response from you.

Best Regards,

What about a journal that is published by a predatory publisher but is on 2013 JCR by Thomson Reuters and has an impact factor.

I am specifically talking about Life Science Journal ISSN 1097-8135 with IF=0.165 and published by Marsland Press. It charges $640 as publication fee.

Is it advisable not to publish in such a journal even if it in JCR and has an impact factor.

From what i discovered, Index Copernicus predated some of these so-called A-list open access journals we know. Index Copernicus (IC), was established in 1999, BioMed Central was founded in 2000, The Public Library of Science began in 2000, Dove Medical Press was founded in 2003, Co-Action Publishing was founded in 2007 etc. To a large extent, i can vouch for Index Copernicus (IC) but i don’t know about the other two. Only time will tell.

I recommend you to read more about IC factor before call it scam! There are some positive and meaningful correlation between IC value and impact factor reported by JCR. You can find many ISI indexed journals with high impact factor and relatively high IC values.

As usual, you present premature judgement!

Dear Dr. Jeffrey,
Its great to have you here to help us out!
I request you to kindly look into the Asia Pacific Journal of Marketing and Logistics. Though its not indexed in Scopus but in ABI iNFORMS. Also the journal is published in Australia and included in emeraldinsight database. How credible is it?Thanks

I didn’t say it was a scam.
I stand by my criticism of the IC value.

I don’t think it’s an open-access journal, and I limit my work to OA journals.

Dear Jeffrey,

Do you have any information on “Annex Publishers” as a possible predatory publisher? They launched 5 open access journals and expecting a dozen of new journals in future.

Yes, this publisher is on my list. I recommend against submitting papers to them.
