Comment on More Duplicate Journal Titles by R.V. Krishnakumar

Dear Dr.Beall – ISSN just gives any serial publication an identification number something similar to a Post Office registering (not empowered to providing!) an address for a newly built home. The job of ISSN ends there, I think. ISSN acts as a Post Office and it can’t act on what is happening inside these ‘homes’, irrespective of whether it is located in a posh area (Nature, Science, etc.) or a slum (predatory OAs). If ISSN where to be a farce as claimed by an unscrupulous blogger named ‘Robin Hood’ (I request that you have a check on this possible imposter who might well be a predatory OA editor himself and yet sheds crocodile tears in this forum), distinguished journals such as Nature and Science would not be carrying it. And, this forum is helpful to the gullible (if they really are!) to ascertain themselves about where they are ending up with their publication. Thanks to your detailed criteria which is handy to distinguish between the good and bad. All my colleagues are now aware of your good work and I believe they would use it to their best. It is here, the parameter called ‘impact factor’ plays a useful role. Impact factor is a parameter and doesn’t require an ISO. Also, I don’t foresee any grave danger out of these fake OA’s since a worthy scholar would not allow himself to be preyed upon by a fraudster OA. To put it in a nutshell – “Nothing is misty in one’s room unless he is too heavily drunk”. Is my understanding right?

Comment on Exposing Sketchy Faculty Publications: The Dirty Western by Robert J. Hironimus-Wendt, WIU

For what it’s worth, I decided to search on the “41” faculty members the DW claims to have publicly outed in their blog. In fact, only 16 of the names they publicly outed are on faculty at WIU. Given that we have 650 FT faculty, 16 = less than 2.5%. Wow. Good work DW. The sky is clearly still falling.

PS – Of these, none were tenured as a result of predatory publications.

Comment on Defining Platinum Open Access by skanicl

I believe that Stevan Harnad didn’t have in mind “gold” defining “golden road to OA”, but having in mind what golden road turns to be out, I like the term “platinum open access”. It is not misleading as “golden open access”, and it’s somehow returning the real meaning of “open access journals” separating it from commercial sphere.
The present “golden open access” should be named “in advance paid open access”.
Soumyadeep B: The platinum open access could have the same definition as golden one, excluding country/institution/author payment for a specific paper to be published.

The above link to what ‘BMC states’ led me to COPE (http://publicationethics.org/), I found lot of useful stuff including its dealing with cases of unethical practices. I was unaware of COPE until this post. Curiosity led me to its members where I saw many distinguished journals enrolled. I chose country-wise listing and the link to ‘India’ led me to a small list where I could pick “Journal of Pharmaceutical and Biomedical Sciences (JPBMS), which is listed here. JPBMS finding a place alongside good ones and at the same time in company with predators! Is the ‘physics’ behind this simple? May I request your comments on this.

I think I would be able to see better after OA alcohol !!!

Now the IOSR has come up with a new brand new website and has stepped up an google ad words campaign. Now they charge 120.00 USD. And now they aren’t any more Open Access.

And the guy who owns it is Chetan Sharma.

We should do something to stop it.

Obviously Asian owners, don’t think it’s connected to the cresent symbol though.

Without pointing directly to any Asian ethnicities, these ‘enterprising’ Asians have set up shop not just in North America but also in Europe…

…AND as always, “we only publish high quality papers. To cover our publication costs, we only charge USDXXX for the privilege of getting published.”

P.S. You mentioned CCSE, right? I was one of those stupid enough to get duped by them, sorry to say.

P.P.S. The print journal came all the way… wait for it… wait for it… CHINA. Obviously the owners are all based there.

Don’t waste your hard-earned $$$ folks and really, DO NOT tarnish your own reputation by publishing in these bogus journals.

I learned the hard way :-(

If a new publishers starts new journals, then how is the publisher supposed to advertise about his journals in ethically correct manner/ without spamming, so that other readers/researchers will come to know about the journals?

I have to laugh even with some of the legit publications, the claim to be indexed is almost meaningless. Such as the claim to be “indexed in Ulrich’s Web”.. Ulrich’s merely publishes information sent to it from publishers, and I find it full of errors.

Thank you for the enlightment as many students and researcher would have fall into their trap. Such action by VDM does not tell good of them and can lead them to no where since people have been alerted.
Once again thanks for the useful information.

Thank you very much for your wonderfully helpful information.

I’m sorry if this is not the right place to leave a question. I wonder why Eurojournal is on the list. Some of its journals-e.g.European Journal of Social Sciences-are indexed by Scopus and SJRscimago. Isn’t that enough a guarantee that these journals have peer reviewers?

I was told by those who published in these journals that their papers were accepted so very easily though. They said they didn’t have to make any change.

Thank you very much again.

Well, you partially answered your own question.

Also, being indexed by Scoups (and covered by Scimago) is not really a measure of quality. These services are in competition with others, so they try to include more journals in their coverage. They whey they go to sell their products, they can say that they have a greater coverage than their competitors do.
