Comment on List of Predatory Publishers 2014 by Jeffrey Beall

Thank you. First regarding the journals published by the Zenith International Research and Academic Foundation, these journals are not open-access. You have to buy a subscription. If you examine the individual articles closely, you only see the abstract and the references. The full-text is only for subscribers. The European Journal of Business and Management is published by the International Institute for Science, Technology and Education (IISTE), which is included on my list here. Summary: Avoid both journals. Do not submit any papers to them.

I am just a curious visitor and not a researcher.

I just want to make a comment:

I noticed that most of the people who posted here in the past seem to have names from developing countries (English as not first/official/main language) and mention journals based in those countries. I do not want to add further comment, but this certainly indicates something, eh?

Now, something completely different; I will not mention specifics in the public like here:

I myself have volunteered to be a peer reviewer just to gain experience and see how it goes. I have asked for advice regarding whether I should stay as a peer reviewer for 3 journals from a publishing company listed on the predatory journal list (Yes, its journals are very bad quality, I agree; however, they are of 2012, not recent. Some are decent.). The person has replied that he/she agrees that the journal is very quality and he/she will not submit anything. However, he/she mentioned that he/she remains on the editorial board because he/she believes that it is important to peer review journals so the publishing company can improve.

What do you think? (Note: he/she is an associate professor; I myself is of undergraduate level)

Should we not question anyone engaging with a company headquartered in Iran, with partners in India, Pakistan and Iraq? Sounds like the scholarly axis of evil!

But secondly, a reminder to question the value of Impact Factors and glamour publications.

He is not DOAJ Associate Editor. He is actually using this association to attract people. DOAJ is a reputed organization. I am also forwarding this post to DOAJ.

Wow. I think this case is striking because it is so blatant. It looks as if they really don’t think there is anything unethical about impact factor gaming…

they are crooks. they sent invitation to publish, when we asked on the fee they said 900$ but due to invitation-entitled discount just 125$ and after 6 months, without ever sending galley proofs, they contacted the only author of the group based on another city and ask for 620$ (that is 5 times more, without keeping their part of the bargain, which is a publication entailing the proper steps (galley proofing included).

Unfortunately, Iranian scientific community is plagued with numerous fraudulent acts which are genuinely appalling and disgusting. I would like to share with you one of the most egregious ways used by some so-called scholarly authors when it comes to producing a paper. I have recently learned that there are some articles published in domestic Iranian journals that are actually mere translation of papers published in other languages, especially English language into Persian. Authors involved in such blatant actions just go to the bother of translating a paper published in a high-quality journal into Iranian language and then publish it in their own and institution`s names . This happens mainly due to the fact that domestically operated journals in Iran seriously lack thorough review processes and this aspect that a submitted paper by an Iranian author might be just a translation of foreign authors` works is never investigated by many Iranian journals.

I didn’t read all of the comments, so this may have been mentioned. But Sage has recently put out a new journal Social Media + Society, edited by a hugely respected scholar in the field, Zizi Papacharissi– I would have assumed this would be a great, reputable place to publish. But closer inspection shows this is a pay-to-play journal– the submission instructions say “The costs of peer-review and production are covered by Article Processing Charges (APC) paid by the author/institution/funder upon acceptance of the manuscript. For an extended introductory period all APCs will be waived, a policy that will be reviewed as the journal establishes itself. In future an APC will be set at a level appropriate to the discipline, with a waiver policy available for those authors who do not have the means to cover the APC.” Now I’m confused… I thought Sage was well regarded, definitely don’t understand the direction this is going! Any thoughts? http://www.sagepub.com/journalsProdDesc.nav?prodId=Journal202332

Greeting, Dr. Beall.

My name is Pakvalit Kurkoon, A Ph.D. student at Rajamangala University of Technology Thanyaburi, Thailand. Last year, I went to Singapore and presented my conceptual framework at a conference named COES&RJ-SG. This is the first time I visit this blog, then I shocked when I found that the COES&RJ is on your predatory publishers list.

Would you kindly tell me why the COES&RJ is on the list?

and, Do you think conferences (e.g., TMBER, MTAR) of Global Illuminators, the publisher, are safe?

Thank you very much.

PS. I have to apologize if I used wrong English grammar.

Scientia leading to veritas is a self purifying system or process. The unsupported goes extinct by natural selection. Google scholar is more encompasing and therefore has more “noise”, but its preferable in my view to preselected curated compilations that excludes some journals for arbitrary subjective reasons such as country of origin, language or impact factor

GSTF is one of the key players of Springer’s GSJ. There are 17 GSTFs journals on GSJ not just a few as reflected on your blog. In order for a blog to be credible it has to state the facts. You may visit either GSTF website or GSJ.

Ah yes, the so-called Centre of Excellence for Scientific & Research Journalism, which is based in Asia but on its website pretends to be based in Houston. It publishes ground breaking journals such as the Journal of Social Sciences. This is just another run-of-the-mill OA publisher pretending to be U.S.-based to increase its revenue.

It also offers vacations, oops, I mean conferences. I do not analyze conferences, and I especially do not tell which are ‘safe.’

Now, I see. Thank you very much, Dr. Beall.

So, could I say any publisher who is not on you list is ‘ok’ to submit a paper to? As an amateur, I don’t want to fall into a mouse-trap again. Please give me some hints to scan and avoid predatory publishers.

For example, there is now a paper currently again under review after two postive referee reports. After having been asked for a decision, I required some more referee reports, and now it received two more referees. So, if it will be finally accepted, it will have received 4 referee reports…

No. The purpose of my lists is to warn scholars about potential, possible, or probable low quality or predatory publishers and journals. Please do not assume that a journal or publisher not on my list is okay. The lists are not designed to allow for that conclusion.

I am very sorry this has happened. I think that MedCrave is owned by OMICS Group, and this is exactly how they work.
I am sorry, but it will be difficult or impossible to get your money back. Perhaps an attorney can help.
