A possible indication of the target audience is the page stating publication fees in Zloty, Rubles, dollars, Euros and Ukrainian Hryvnia. On the Russian-language version, anyway… the Polish version just specifies Zloty (and the English version of that page is blank).

I see they’ve gone through a Hong Kong agency for anonymous registration of the website.

The journal is described as being founded in 2012. Is it possible that it had a previous site/affiliation? Is this date incorrect? Their site appears to have only been created in June of 2015 and, according to their archives, the earliest issue of their journal was published in 2015 (if you look directly at the earliest listed journal cover image, you’ll notice that the title changes from Eastern European Science Journal to East European Science Journal). Also, on the contact page of the Russian language version of the site, there is a link to the business registration document for their Warsaw address, which describes the business as being registered on August 10th, 2015:

http://eesa-journal.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/Journal_registration.pdf

Regarding their address, Aleje Jerozolimskie 85/21, 02-001 Warszawa, Polska, it seems to belong to a company that provides virtual offices (their map matches that on the essa-journal site perfectly):

http://www.biurowirtualnewarszawa.pl/english/contact-us.html

This company does provide Warsaw landlines as well, however, their number appears to be linked to Ortelmobile.ru, a Russian communications company, which can provide you with a direct city number in Warsaw. They just happen to sell essa-journal’s #, +48221168617:

Hi Mr Beall,
I found some predatory publishers you listed here are indexed in Emerging source citation index ( ESCI) of WOS and some of them in Scopus. An example of that one journal entitles “International journal of English Linguistics” under the Canadian Centre of Science and Education. Also another journal is indexed in ESCI Arab World of English Journal which doesn’t have a peer review and beg for money.

Right, I think the “Emerging Sources Citation Index” should be called the “Questionable Sources Citation Index.” I think it has so far demonstrated that it is a dirty database. Thomson Reuters is trying to compete with Scopus but not doing a very good job.

Anthony Maverick sounds like the hero of a low-budget 80s cop movie – the kind who doesn’t play by the rules, and has his badge temporarily confiscated by the Chief at least once a month, but gets results. He probably regularly fights ethnic minorities out to destroy America, and banters with his partner while showering.

Fortunately, Anthony Maverick is probably qualified to sit on the editorial board of a scientific journal, because he has a degree in ass-whuppin’ and a doctorate in JUSTICE!

Dear Jeff,
Thanks for all you have been doing. Here is another strange practice to add to the criteria list for determining predatory open-access publishers:

Swapping Between “Theme” of one author and using “body of manuscript” of another author.

This is the problem that I face with International Journal of Recent Scientific Research (IJRSR – http://www.recentscientific.com), a publisher you categorized as “standalone.”

I have made several effort to correct this “simple error” without success. The publisher maintains my manuscript has been published. The Theme of my paid manuscript is: “Malaria-Endemic Nations: Overlooked Primary Elimination Strategy,” but published under Lytvynova, S.G., as the author, using his/her manuscript (Issue: 11, Volume: 6).
The Theme (That is, my Theme without the body of my manuscript) deals with technology research. The Theme and body of my article deal with health/medicine.
Please use your good office as always to investigate this publisher.
Thanks again.

Sincerely,
Emea Uma

Thanks, I will have a look at this.
The journal is indeed included on my list of standalone journals. These are single journals that do not have a publisher. If you could send me a link to your article, that would be helpful. Take care.

How can you be so sure of your recommendations while journals such as the International Journal of Advanced
Computer Science and Applications IJACSA are indexed by Thomson Reuters Emerging Sources Citation Index ?

Jeff, thanks for this, but it makes me a bit nervous. i don’t know if you are going to list this as a predatory journal, but I would be cautious. A journal for kooks is subtly different from simple money-making off aspiring authors. Maybe here it is better for the astrobiology community to rip the papers apart in other journals rather than putting the journal on the list. There is a fine line between downright fraud and establishing outlets for unorthodox views. This is quite a specialist field, where the disgruntled may claim that genuine innovation is being stifled. Better to get it out there and debunked.

Is this a scam? I was invited to be a speaker at a United Scientific Group conference because of my Springer book “When Trucks Stop Running: Energy and the Future of Transportation”. The conference is called “International Conference on Gas, Oil and Petroleum Engineering” (GOPE-2016) Las Vegas, USA November 14-16, 2016. I wrote the hotel where the conference is being held, and the Hampton Inn Tropicana and Event Center said that “We do not have a conference for International Conference on Gas, Oil and Petroleum Engineering.” I’ve been asked to pay $549 within a few weeks. If this is a scam, it’s very clever, I usually ignore conference invitations, but they stated a specific chapter in my book so I assumed this was a real conference, but now I’m not so sure…

Anyone who believes that aliens sent a “seed” to earth and it contained “genetic material” that survived temperatures of 1000 C are dead in the water.
Another crack pot scientist trying to lie his way into becoming what they call a “big name”.

There is a fine line between downright fraud and establishing outlets for unorthodox views.

If it’s from the OMICS stable, it’s because the management have seen a profit to be made by facilitating kooks. The money coming from institutions employing the kooks.

Maybe here it is better for the astrobiology community to rip the papers apart in other journals

They may have better things to do.

In other news, it turns out that when you obtain a grainy photograph of a porous rock and blow it up enough, the image has some of the same textural properties as a polished slice through a fossilised stromatolite, therefore LIFE ON MARS.

Point taken, and a worthy one. Thank you, Robert!

If one keeps track of citations to Beall’s List via “Google Scholar Alert,” you’ll see Beall’s List is enormously respected and cited in numerous subject journals, ranging from professional nursing to health care to various hard sciences.

Beall’s List is less uniformly respected amongst some librarians and some publishing industry commentators This is particularly true “The Scholarly Kitchen” blog.

Why is this so?

The reasons don’t seem to be entirely clear, but the difference is very striking.

Any opinions/input on this?

This is an odd comment as it insinuates that trained, critical, and successful researchers need to take Beall’s list ‘with a grain of salt’. That’s not true. I’ve studied at two top schools in North America and published widely; no one I ever came across ever said or thought “I, personally, think Beall got it wrong and I’ll take a chance at Omics/Bentham/IJJJSASESEE/The International Journal of Chemical Society of Slovenia, Letters, etc.”. My point is that It doesn’t even take Beall’s list to know that a journal is as worthless as horse shit. Sure, we can frame this around free speech, but how is publishing junk science and disguising a non-academic publication as a scientific journal free speech? That is only meant to mislead and to serve as a venue for crackpot “research”.
